You don't have to spend money on new furniture for a fresh look in the living room. "Shop" your attic, cupboards and closets for interesting what to enliven the area. Line several pairs of worn up, hand‐tooled cowboy boots across the sofa table. Hang up the vintage garden tools, inherited from a former owner of the house, in the sofa. Paint an old upper body and deputize it as your brand‐new coffee table. Replace the dining area rug with a sisal mat and move the rug to the living room dialogue area. Sew tabs at the tops of canvas dropcloths and use them as drapes. Decoupage old newspaper maps to the within back panels of your bookcases. Fill the unfilled firebox of the decorative fireplace with an stacked pile of beautiful espresso table catalogs artfully.
Be sparing with the floor coverings and wall structure treatments. A simple carpet such as sisal or a Berber style more than a hard‐surface floor is fine (but don't layer over wall‐to‐wall carpet).
