Select pieces of varying sizes and shapes. For clean lines and a minimalist look, line up pieces of similar size and shapes. For some other looks, vary the sizes and shapes of bits for interest. Start with a more substantial piece in the relative back, then place medium‐sized pieces next to it or smaller pieces before it.
Chandeliers are the order of the day in a formal dining area and may add an eclectic touch to more casual space, but if mixing styles isn’t your thing, consider alternatives. Switch out the chandelier and only a more casual fixture. A light fixture with a metallic shade that appears like it originated from a factory provides an industrial feel, while pendant equipment and lighting designed from mason jars supply the available room a primitive vibe. Overhead lighting isn’t your only choice. Situating floor lamps near the desk illuminates it and the immediate area, and lamps placed on a sideboard create ambient light.
